Sometimes, the best things in life truly are free. If you’ve been itching to get away this summer, but your budget didn’t get the memo, we can help! With a bit of creativity and the willingness to try something new, you can have your vacation and your budget, too.
Here are seven ways to vacation for free.
1. Move someone’s car
A fabulous way to get from Point A to Point B for free is to offer to transfer someone’s car. People who may be moving across state lines, or even across the country, may need someone to transfer their vehicle for them. Car rental companies that have branches all over the country can have the same need. Find someone near you who’s in need of vehicle relocation through companies like Auto Driveway or Transfercar. Both services require the driver to have a valid driver’s license. For Auto Driveway, you must be 23 to 75 years old and also have a clean driving record.
2. Swap houses
Don’t drop big bucks on hotel stays or Airbnbs! If you have friends or family members who live far away from where you live, consider a summertime swap. You’ll each enjoy exploring the others’ hometown without spending a dollar on vacation accommodations.
To maximize the fun, you can go all-out and prep your respective homes like hotels. Lay out your nicest towels, set up mints on the pillows and leave a visitors’ guide with all the best places to hit in each of your respective towns.
3. Blend work and travel
If you can’t afford to take a vacation, consider combining work and travel. There are many jobs you can do while traveling, like getting hired as a flight attendant, travel blogging or working as a travel nurse. Are you itching to sail the seven seas? You can get a job aboard a cruise ship through All Cruise Jobs, CrewSeeker or Yacrew. You might find work in entertainment, as a server or photographer while aboard.
4. Become a digital nomad
In today’s digital world, many jobs can be done from anywhere in the world. In fact, some 15.5 million American workers currently describe themselves as digital nomads. You can find short-term programs through Hacker Paradise and WiFi Tribe to help jumpstart your travel-work lifestyle for a small fee. If you’d prefer to stay in one place and travel only on weekends, you can ask your employer to be transferred to another state or a different country for a short-term assignment. If that doesn’t work, consider looking for alternate work for a company having branches in several different cities and/or countries to make for easy travel while still at work.
5. Plan around a work trip
If your current job requires occasional travel, turn your next business trip into a vacation. If you have a job that requires you to hit the road from time to time, incorporate a vacation into your next work trip. Book your flight out a day early if possible and see if you can stay an extra day as well. Check out local hotspots and attractions during any free time you have on your trip, and squeeze in a meal or two at a restaurant, too. Take a leisurely stroll between work commitments and pretend you’re only there for a vacay.
6. Volunteer with an organization
If you’re willing to volunteer as a teacher, farm hand or in another capacity, you may be able to score free room and board in an exotic location, and sometimes airfare as well. This can be a wonderful way to see the world and make it into a better place at the same time. Here are some organizations that can help you find a volunteer trip:
- Peace Corps partners in hands-on projects with 60 countries around the world.
- AmericCorps arranges service projects that can last from three months to a year, in communities across the U.S. Members receive transportation to their assigned campus and projects, accommodations and a living allowance of $180-$500 every two weeks.
- WWOOF (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms) pairs volunteers with organic farm hosts in 130 countries. In exchange for 25 hours of farmwork a week, you’ll receive free room and board in a rural setting. Plus, you’ll learn all about farming and gardening.
- HelpStay lists 1,500 volunteer stays in 100-plus countries.
7. Get bumped from a flight
If you’re asked to volunteer to be bumped from a flight, consider agreeing and delaying your trip by a few hours. In exchange, you’ll be compensated with money or vouchers that can be used for a flight sometime in the future.
