International Credit Union Day and Indiana Co-Op Week
This Thursday, Oct. 21, is International Credit Union Day, when credit unions in Indiana and elsewhere celebrate what it means to people around the world to have a credit union as their financial partner. This year’s theme, “Building Financial Health for a Better Tomorrow,” speaks to how the COVID-19 pandemic continues to challenge the financial well-being of credit union members around the globe, and how credit unions are helping members further their lives financially. According to the World Council of Credit Unions, there are more than 86,000 credit unions in the world serving 291 million members in 118 countries. This includes the 2.8 million credit union members here in Indiana.
Additionally, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb has declared this week “Indiana Co-Op Week” to recognize credit unions and other cooperative businesses throughout the state including the way they “help build and sustain healthy communities in Indiana, promote jobs and enhance the quality of life for those in our state and throughout the country.” A copy of his proclamation, which mentions this and other benefits of cooperatives, can be found here(link is external).
